Church History

On Sunday, May 13 (Mother's Day), 1990, 17 people met in the living room at the home of Johnnie and Margaret Lynn. At this time, the group voted to form a new work to be called Calvary Brethren Church (Independent). We were able to hold our first meeting on the following Sunday, May 20, 1990.

On August 1, 1990, we began our first Wednesday night prayer service. At this time, Rev. Kenneth Teague agreed to come and lead our mid-week prayer service. We began an Evening service on September 1, 1990, at which time we held our first Communion service, with Pastor Teague conducting the service. He had agreed to come as Interim Pastor and speak to our Morning worship hour and still do the Wednesday night prayer service.

On Sunday night, October 14, 1990, we held our first official business meeting with 26 voting members present. At this meeting a motion was made that the church purchase six (6) lots on Woodland Avenue. The vote was unanimously in favor. We celebrated our First Anniversary with a record attendance on May 19, 1991. On December 2, 1990, the church called Pastor Teague to become our full-time Pastor.

On Sunday, October 20, 1999 at 2 PM, we had our ground breaking and raised $50,000 of our goal for construction. The first service in the new sanctuary was held on Wednesday night, November 15, 1992 and the first official Sunday morning worship was on November 20, 1992.

We have seen this congregation grow from the original 17 members on May 13, 1990, to a congregation of 255 as of May, 2005. Throughout the entire process of getting this church erected, it has been a labor of love. We look forward to what God has in store for Calvary Brethren Church. Let us "...press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:14. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!
